Sip and Savor 2011

Sip and Savor is upon us. It seems like these days, there are so many wonderful weeklong dining events, that it’s hard to keep track of them all! From the 16th to the 30th, tons of restaurants around town will be featuring special menu’s or food events. Here is a list of some of the best:

Prix Fixe Menus 1/16/11 through 1/30/11:

Mangia - $20 for 2 – (menu) - You get a salad, a 10” stuffed pizza and a delicious dessert. Talk about a cheap date!

El Arbol - $35 for 4 course  - (menu) – Empanadas, an oak smoked trout salad, seared Escolar with  herb manchego gnocchi and Coconut Dulce De Leche

La Sombra - $28 for 3 courses – (menu) – The salad alone makes it worth trying: Frisee Salad, Pork Belly, Roasted Beets and Potatoes, Peanuts, Salsa Criolla, and an Orange Citronette but throw in an entrée of Braised Lamb Shank, Pepion de Choclo, Sauteed Kale and a dessert of Seasonal Citrus Curd with Meringue Cookie. Mmm, yes please!

Sagra - $35 for 3 courses – (menu) – I consider Sagra like one of my boyfriend’s old college friends. He likes him a lot and wants to see him all the time, I think he’s ok most of the time but from time to time has a moment of brilliance.  But this menu looks really tasty, an appetizer of Tuna Crudo with Fennel, orange, capers and a blood orange vinaigrette a second appetizer of Grapefruit & Campari Sorbet (can you say YUM), an entrée of Pan Seared Scallops with Riso nero, roasted fennel, lobster broth and for dessert Flourless Chocolate Cake with Blood orange sorbet, salted caramel.

Urban - $35 for 3 courses – (menu) – Most of the menu seemed pretty ho hum, Sweet corn bisque, shrimp and grits, etc until I got to the dessert: Avo tres leches – Moist sponge cake soaked in three milks topped with sundried tomato creme fraiche.. Um say what.. Sun dried tomato crème fraiche.. One of you HAS to try this and tell me what you think.

Whole Foods - $25 for 5 courses – (menus) – Whole foods is doing something really different. 3 of their restaurant kiosks (which I never knew until today actually have names) will be offering 5 course dinners – the North Side Trattoria, the 5th Street Seafood, and the Good Greens Raw bar. I LOVE the Whole Foods raw bar, but it’s usually so expensive. This is a really stellar deal.

Food Deals:

Max’s Wine Dive – 1/16, 1/23, 1/30 – On Sunday’s this month, Max’s will be offering ½ off their burgers. What a tasty good deal.

Food Events:

The Meat House – 1/17 5:30-8:00 – The Meat House (which has been open for several months) will be having their Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. They’re going to set up a bunch of grills on the sidewalk to offer samples of their wares.

Snack Bar – 1/17 9:00-12:00pm – The Snack Bar will be showing Sideways in addition to offering their normal menu. Get a bite to eat and watch a movie!

Frank – Frank Donneybrook Latte Competition – 1/26 7:00 – Frank will be hosting a competition for local baristas. See some true baristas at work and get all you can drink coffee (note: please don’t kill yourself on caffeine)

Frank – Bourbon, Beer and Brat’s – 1/26 7:00 – Boy, Frank’s going to be having a busy night. For $10, you get a sampling of their sausages, AND complimentary Live Oak beer and Maker’s Mark cocktails. Plan on seeing me here. It’s guaranteed.

Frank – Frank Rec Room – 1/26 9:00 – Ok, Frank’s is REALLY going all out. That same evening, they’re also doing a Twin Peaks showing with Mexican Loteria and Ping Pong games AND 2 great live bands, including one of my local Austin faves L.A.X. I am NOT missing this!
